Growing up in Milford on Sea and regularly gigging around the local area, Carley Varley is a name that many people recognise. After winning the Dorset Musical Talent Award in 2018, she also went on to become an Open Mic UK Finalist, performing in venues such as The O2 and The Ritz. With her debut EP now on the horizon, Carley sat down to talk to ISSY ALDRIDGE about her journey from music fan to full-time independent artist.
I: Where does your musical inspiration come from?
C: I have always drawn musical inspiration from lots of different areas. In terms of people, I love rock bands and have always felt inspired to sing with a passion. I often just sit in the quiet and write songs and I find it amazing how much peace can inspire music too.
I: How did you find the transition from part-time to full-time musician?
C: So it was really weird at first! I never believed it could happen as much as I wanted it to. I had worked so many part-time jobs that I hated alongside University, I was absolutely miserable. One day when I was doing gigs on the side I just thought, 'wait I want to do this all the time' and my fiance encouraged me to do it and has helped me so much. Being a full-time musician is a great job because I am passionate about it, so even the difficult parts are amazing!
I: Your debut EP 'Catching Memories' is due for release in the next few weeks. What can you tell us about that?
C: So this EP will have 3 songs. It's a small start but they are all very different. One is about friendship, the other is about love and the last one is about rumours. I would expect it to be very different… and very Carley.
I: Having grown up in the village, do you have any fond memories from previous years?
C: Absolutely! I always went along and dreamed of being on stage one day. I remember being at Priestlands and going with friends to the festival. We always danced and had so much fun.
I: So what was it about the festival that made you want to get involved?
C: I guess I would have to say the 13-year-old me. It was her dream to sing on a festival stage and where better than my home town? Milford Festival is an epic event and I am so happy to be involved, and I think 13-year-old me would be proud!
I: What will you be doing after your set this year?
C: Probably having a nice Gin and Tonic before my next gig! I never get to relax on weekends but being involved in the festival means I can relax after my set! I am so excited!
